Earthquakes are common in Japan due to the country lying on several tectonic plates.
These plates include:
These plates include:
- The Eurasian Plate
- The Pacific Plate
- The Philippine Plate
Luckily, these earthquakes can be detected with the several earthquake detection stations across the islands using devices such as seismographs. Seismographs are used to detect seismic waves. Energy released from earthquakes are in the form of seismic waves. Two types of seismic waves are surface waves, waves that travel along the surface of the earth and body waves, which travel through Earth's interior. If an earthquake were to occur, people should immediately evacuate the area and stay on upper levels of strong buildings.
